Red Rocks Part II

NOTE: this somehow posted without any of the pictures. I’ll fix it later when I have a minute.

I’m getting so far behind! This’ll be super abridged- mostly just so you can see the pictures.

Grand Canyon was wonderful! Though we had to pay for camping in Kaibab…..don’t listen to what they tell you at the Jacob Lake visitor center- dispersed camping *is* allowed, with a permit. But we got to hike around the North Rim for the better part of a day. The high altitude made us keenly aware of how out of shape we are. Neat animals, mind-boggling views, cold nights with campfires, and just overall good times.

Then we made our way to Lava Point Campground in Zion (FREE). The road is terrifying- we earned that free camping just by getting there. No water- we didn’t quite take enough for the kind of hiking we wanted to do, so we hiked one day in the heat (about 8 miles), then enjoyed reading at Kolob Resevoir (beautiful, and would have been great for fishing) the next day. I did our hike in flip-flops! I’m hoping this means I’m ready for Vanuatu….

Oh! And our last night in Lava Point we were able to take the rain cover off our tent, stare at the stars, and listen to the elk calling to each other until we fell asleep. It was sooooo neat.

After our solid week of nomad camping, we stumbled our way back to civilization… Poor Grandma A had to welcome us into our home before we got cleaned up….

Coming up next: Visits to the grandparents!
